ADAMS MORGAN LANDMARK CELEBRATES FIVE DECADES OF FUN!

Millie & Al’s Restaurant will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on May 8th, 9th, and 10th, 2013.

Millie & Al’s was on 18th Street before Adams Morgan became Adams Morgan. It is a landmark to the neighborhood and to DC. Al Shapiro, the original owner, bought the restaurant in 1963, becoming neighbors with the first Toys R Us, Dart Drug, Peoples Drug, and Gartenhaus Furs. Millie & Al’s survived the riots of 1968, Little Harlem, and Little Habana. Few would have remained in business during those bad times, but it all paid off. Millie & Al's, once a lone restaurant, is surrounded by restaurants, bars, clubs and boutique stores.

Millie & Al's hasn't changed much over the years, as it remains a neighborhood “dive bar” with a very eclectic decor, including the famous Jell-o light bulb. Almost everything on the walls has a story. The employees of a local car dealership came in daily and after their boss died they brought in the large lighted horse picture from his office. They hung the picture above the booth where they all sat almost 50 years ago. The picture is still hanging above the booth.

Somebody always knows somebody who met at or has been to Millie & Al’s--as one of the T-shirts reads “I Met Your Mother at Millie & Al’s.”

The many animated props have amused customers over the years including the dancing skeleton that dances when the Jell-o light bulb flashes. The restaurant is still family owned and may be around another 50 years, who knows?
There will be specials all three days with drink prices for each decade the restaurant has been open. Wednesday the 8th is Motown Wednesday, Thursday the 9th is Karaoke with songs from the 1960s and Friday the 10th there will be a DJ playing music from the 1960’s and on.
